Middle School students get the full-on Mennonite experience

Fourteen Middle School students from Dock Mennonite Academy middle school recently opted to go to school on Saturday! They met up on March 25 with Family & Consumer Science/Bible teacher Mrs. Melanie Baker and Art/Bible teacher Mrs. Alice Keppley at Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville to participate in the first workshop of a unique learning experience entitled From Pig to Pie. Sponsored by Blooming Glen Pork and in collaboration with MHC, students were led by local butcher expert Jim King. They started out with 65 lbs. of meat, and within three hours had turned it into 26 pans of scrapple, about 20 lbs. of fresh sausage, and a quart of lard.

Back at school, they will be making their own redware pie plates using the 18th century
drape mold method. In subsequent lessons, they will make pie crust, using the lard pressed on March 25, and then make two different kinds of pie.

A special thanks to MHEP Director of Advancement Steve Diehl for the great photos!

It's hard to tell who enjoyed the scrapple more: Superintendent Dr. Conrad Swartzentruber and his wife Sharon (top, with Mrs. Keppley), or the Middle School students who whipped up the batch (above).

2nd graders recreate (musically) the parables of Jesus...

Students brought the parables of Jesus to life in their 2nd grade music entitled, aptly, "The Parables." The musical  retold some of Jesus’ best-known parables including “The Sower,” “The Good Samaritan,” “The Lost Sheep,” and “The Prodigal Son.”

"I’d like to commend my colleague, Mrs. Katie Litzenberger, on the superb job that she and the 2nd Graders did performing 'The Parables,' " said Mrs. Shelley Berg. "I am impressed with Katie’s ability to imagine, write, compose, arrange and produce an original musical that is age-appropriate and true to the biblical text. Her students sang well, with accuracy and enthusiasm. I especially enjoyed 'The Prodigal Son' vignette that included the Orff instruments." Bravo, Katie and 2nd graders!

...and grandparents were there to enjoy the performance

Grandparents of 2nd graders enjoyed a wonderful morning together on March 23, sharing breakfast snacks, artwork and games together. Grandparents were treated to the premiere of The Parables, which was also performed for the public on Friday, March 24.

EC-Grade 8 campus hosts Showcase! for the arts

On Friday, April 28, 2017, Dock Mennonite Academy’s Music, Art, FACS and English Departments will present Showcase! featuring our talented Middle School students.

The purpose of Showcase! is to highlight the talents of our students who excel in the Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Culinary Arts, and to provide adjudication for these performances and creations, while bringing glory to God.

Performing will be our Middle School Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Select Strings, Choir, Bella Vocce, Handbells, instrumental, piano and vocal soloists, small instrumental ensembles and Speeches.  On display, also for adjudication, will be Fine Art, Fiber Art and Culinary Art.

All middle school students will be attending performances and viewing the Fine Art, Fiber Art and Culinary Art throughout the day and will have a chance to cast their vote for their favorite performers and artists. Parents are welcome to join us. A schedule of events will be posted on our website the week of April 28.

Concluding the day will be a performance by violist and Dock Mennonite Academy alumna, Chelsea Wimmer.  During her time at the middle school Chelsea was a member of the orchestra, Select Strings, Choir, Select Choir, Handbells and Jazz Band. We are looking forward to hearing where her love of music has taken her!

Please pray for our students, directors and teachers as we prepare, and present, Showcase! on Friday, April 28, 2017.
